Emma’s first trip to the pool…. May 31, 2008

Filed under: Dispatches, Photos — thelifeofemma @ 9:54 am

It was Memorial Day Weekend, Emma was about 4 months old, and we decided to take her to the pool for the first time.It was quite an experience. When her feet initially hit the water in the wade-in area of the pool, Emma freaked out. As soon as Ashley lifted her up, she stopped crying. Feet into the water — crying. Feet out — happy girl. Then Ashley just sat her down in the pool and she was fine. I wouldn’t say she was enjoying being in the water, but she tolerated it.Emma sat at the water’s edge and watched the little waves come in and lap against her legs.Later, we took her into the “deeper” area and floated around a bit. The whole trip lasted about 30 minutes.Next time, thanks to Honey, Miss Emma will be decked out in an adorable little bathing suit!

She’s playing with her toys… May 24, 2008

Filed under: Dispatches — thelifeofemma @ 10:56 am

It’s a first in our household…Today, we put Emma in her bouncy chair, which has an arching rod that goes over it. From the rod, there are three toys that spin. One is a frog that sings, one is a pair of bumble bees and one is a rattle filled with colorful plastic balls.

We were getting a new dishwasher installed, and Ashley and I were both busy, so Emma was chillin’ in her chair. We looked over, and she was spinning the toys! Granted, we only started putting that rod on there a couple days ago, but we’d never seen her take any real interest in the suspended toys. Needless to say, we were quite proud of our little prodigy and had to stop what we were doing to watch her go.

She’s also taken to talking a lot. We’ll try to get some video of it and post it soon.

And speaking of talking, Emma’s paternal grandparents are convinced that she’s already said her first word.

Now, for those of you who don’t know, Bubbe Alissa has spent her entire adult life working with young children. For almost my entire life, she’s been the director of preschools — first, the one I attended, University Presbyterian Children Center, and then the place she’s been for about two decades, the Block and Dreeben School for Young Children at the San Antonio Jewish Community Center (where Emma goes…click on the link and see her school!).

El Jefe is a lawyer who works with children, and one of the smartest people I know. Their combined intelligence and experience is what makes it so funny. They say Young Emma likes to tell them “Hi.”

Actually, they say she says, “hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.”

If The Little One is in fact speaking, then I think she should probably be in the record books for the youngest child ever to speak. Kids typically say their first words around a year of age… We probably also ought to go ahead and get her enrolled at Harvard.

Anyway, all’s good on the Emma front. Stay tuned for some photos and video!

Boogers in her ear….. May 18, 2008

Filed under: Dispatches — thelifeofemma @ 4:42 pm

About mid-week, I was changing Emma’s diaper at about 7 a.m. When she rolled to her left side, I noticed a stringy booger on that little tab of her ear — you know, that part that’s between the cheek and the ear canal? (Apparently, it’s called the targus, but that’s neither here nor there…).

Anyway, Miss Emma had been mighty congested for about the last month or so, and we’d been using nose drops and a bulb suction (turkey baster) dealy whopper to clean out her nose. When I saw that booger, I thought: “Wow! That booger got all the way from her nostril to her ear!”

A little later, we realized that the booger hadn’t migrated from her nose. It’d come from her EAR. I never knew mucous could back up and ooze out your ear. But that’s the signature symptom of an ear infection. Alas, we had to put our darling on antibiotics and (friggin’ $70) ear drops. Her congestion has almost disappeared, and we haven’t spotted a booger anywhere near her nose in days!

In other news, we think the paternal grandparents are getting closer to their chosen grandparent names. Buju Omama Bubbe Alissa has still yet to select one, but we’ve assigned two (besides Buju Omama Bubbe Alissa, which we use just to try to spur her on to choose her own). She’s now Big Momma (according to Ashley) and La Reina (according to me). I say La Reina (queen, in Spanish) because I think it’s a perfect match for what El Abuelito is taking on. He shall be known as El Jefe (Spanish for the boss).

El Jefe y La Reina, los abuelitos de Emma.

Unfortunately, my dad’s more common nickname doesn’t translate as well into Spanish. He’s more often known as The Dude, a la The Big Lebowski, but freetranslation.com says “dude” translates to petimetre, and who the hell know what THAT means?!?!?

The life of me… May 18, 2008

Dear Friends, Family, Fans…

My daddy put up lots more pictures of me today from the past couple weeks. There are some of me doing “tummy time,” some of me in my lion towel after a bath, and then some more with my grandpa, El Jefe.

Papa says he posts a lot of pictures that are similar because I’m “so damn cute!”

See y’all soon!

People always likes a good poo story… May 11, 2008

Filed under: Dispatches — thelifeofemma @ 12:28 pm

Friday morning, it was business as usual. Ashley was out of the house while I was still in the shower. Emma was sitting in her bouncy chair just outside the bathroom door. The dogs were lounging about, not too interested in anything.

When I got out of the shower, Emma was all smiles, and I started to get ready for work. When I was just finishing up (hurrying about because we were running a bit late), Emma started to fuss, and within seconds was in pure melt-down mode.

“Emma, I’m almost done, Sweetie. Gimme one second, and I’ll pick you up and we’ll get outta here,” I told her. It didn’t seem to work.

I kept my promise, and within 30 seconds of her first starting to fuss, I had her out of the bouncy chair. That’s when I noticed the stain on her onesie — around her belly, above her diaper.

I quickly realized that we had quite a situation on our hands.

There was a helluva mess inside that onesie. I had to take it off downward instead of pulling it up over her head. It looked like someone had taken a spatula and spread stinky chocolate icing all over my baby’s torso.

She was still melting down — obviously uncomfortable — and I was wiping as fast as I could. But I wasn’t fast enough to get her belly cleaned off before she found the mess with her little hands.

Eventually, I got a bucket of warm soapy water and gave her a mini-bath on the changing table, put her in some fresh clothes and got her to school.

When I called Ashley to tell her about the moring event, she couldn’t stop laughing at me. But, the joke was at least partially on her. I was in such a hurry to get out the door, I didn’t have too much time to clean the onesie. So I left it soaking in a bucket in her bathroom sink!

A good sport, Ashley got the surprise when she got home and rescued the outfit from turning into another rag.

Sin Mamacita (or, ‘without Momma’)… May 7, 2008

Filed under: Dispatches — thelifeofemma @ 9:32 am

Last night marked the first time in Emma’s life that she was without Mom. Ashley’s new job sent her to a conference in the Rio Grande Valley yesterday, leaving Papa Josh and Miss Emma to fumble their way through the night.

All in all, it wasn’t a bad experience. I had to work until after 7 p.m., but Emma went home with her yet-to-be-officially-named grandma (temporarily known as Buju Bubbe Omama Alissa — come on, Mom….get on with it!). When I got to their house around 7:45 p.m., she was completely conked out and proceeded to sleep though our making, eating and cleaning-up-of dinner.

I finally got her up, but she went right back to sleep in my arms as we watched election returns from North Carolina and Indiana.

We headed home around 9:45 and I gave the Little One a bath. Afterward she was fast asleep. Emma woke up around 11 to eat, but hardly took anything. She woke up again at 3 a.m. and again at 6:45 a.m. That 3 a.m. awaking was the first time Emma really showed her pining for her mother. She kept looking around, wondering why in the hell she was eating a bottle in the middle of the night.

She wouldn’t calm down and eat. She thrashed her head to and fro’, barely eating her bottle.

Overall, she slept quite well. Big Papi, however, was a nervous wreck, waking up often throughout the night — any time Emma made any noise whatsoever, any time there was a creak in the house, any time the dogs stirred.

I’m writing this blog at a coffeehouse downtown, where I’m trying to fuel up for a day in the office. Mucho caffeine es muy necessary…

Momma Cash will be back from the Valley this afternoon, and Emma and I can’t wait for her homecoming!!!

Second Sunday on Bamburgh… May 4, 2008

Filed under: Dispatches, Photos — thelifeofemma @ 7:17 pm

As you view this slide show, you’ll see a decent amount of repetition. But it’s worth it. In a matter of minutes, Emma went from wearing her duck towel to her bear hat. (The photo of Miss Emma with her Big Papi was from the morning.)

We’re officially wired again. Time Warner was out today installing our cable, phone and internet. The ‘net rocks. It’s literally twice as fast as our connection in Austin, and you know what that means, don’t you??? What, you ask? It means lots more pictures!!!!Until then…

Gettin’ settled…. May 4, 2008

Filed under: Dispatches, Photos — thelifeofemma @ 6:57 pm

Last weekend, we moved all our stuff from Austin to San Antonio. We couldn’t have done it without the amazing help from our friends Uncle Q and Philip. This weekend was spent unpacking….and unloading another trailer, which Ashley’s parents graciously loaded in Austin (when Ashley moved out of the South Austin house), stored in Marshall, and then drove down to San Antone on Friday.

We now have washer and dryer, a second fridge, a dining room table, an old desk I’d restored, hoses, lawn furniture, and the list goes on.

Our house is now a home! Since we were so busy unloading, unpacking, painting, etc., there aren’t too many photos. But enjoy these few. Up next: amazing photos of Miss Emma in her bath towel…
