We got skunked… August 19, 2008

Filed under: Dispatches — thelifeofemma @ 8:54 am

Literally. We got skunked.

This morning, we woke up to a wonderful thunderstorm and the sound of rain pounding on our roof. In San Antonio, we desperately need the rain, so any time we get a storm, we welcome it. When we have afternoon storms, Ashley and I like to sit on the back porch and watch the rain fall.

But with the beloved rain also comes some minor issues. Typically the worst aspect of the rain is the mud our dogs track inside. We can live with a little mud. It dries and we sweep it up. But today, the rain brought out a whole new level of problems.

By the smell of it, Greta cornered a skunk in the back yard (which was probably there because it got flushed out because of the torrential downfall). The dogs came back inside and it immediately smelled like there was an electrical fire in the house (who knew the strongest skunk spray smells like burning rubber and copper?).

So, now there’s mud all over the house, and the smell of skunk has permeated every nook and cranny. When I dropped Emma off at the JCC, she smelled like a skunk (coincidentally, she’s going to be a skunk for her first Halloween!). And now that I’m at work — sitting in Commissioners Court at the Bexar County Courthouse — I smell like skunk. The odor is so strong that nobody is sitting within six seats of me. It’s so strong that my nose hairs burn and I’m a bit nauseated.

Ashley could smell the skunk odor when she got into the elevator this morning. She’s undoubtedly suffering from the same. It’s truly horrible. And, after working for a day whilst smelling like skunk, we’re going to have to return to a house that smells like skunk, dogs that smell like skunk and deal with it all. As Ashley would say, “Fun times!!!”

Everything’s funny…. August 17, 2008

Emma isn’t what you’d call a “laughing machine,” but certain things get her going. The other night, right before she went to bed, she starting making a “dada” sound. I was hoping to catch some video of her making that sound, but instead every time I tried to get her to make it, she’d laugh at me.

She’s growing so fast… August 16, 2008

Filed under: Dispatches — thelifeofemma @ 9:56 am

Emma had her six-month wellness checkup on Tuesday, where she got yet another round of shots. Her measurements were taken, and of course her gushing parents were soooooo proud of her growth. She weighed in at 17 lbs. 4 oz. and measured 25.5 inches tall, which sounds much bigger when you say she’s over two feet tall.

The reality of it is she’s smack dab in the middle of the growth charts, measuring right around the 50th percentile in height and weight. Where she blows the charts out of the water is in head circumference, which is steadily in the 95th-plus percentile.

She’s also moving forward on her “solid food” consumption. As you may have read in an earlier blog, The Little One wasn’t much of a fan of the rice cereal. She seemed to like the homemade green beans a bit better, but she still pursed her lips and spit out more than she actually ate. Then yesterday, we tried giving her some bottled food — the organic stuff from Whole Foods — and she really dug it. She ate all her sweet potatoes and really seemed even to enjoy them.

So the next question is whether she’d be as eager to eat homemade sweet potatoes. We’ll let you know when we figure it out.

Emma & the lion, oh, and some green beans… August 16, 2008

Most of these photos are of Emma with her new lion from a Japanese department store in NYC. There are a few photos of Emma eating green beans, which she seemed to like slightly more than the rice cereal we’d originally started her on. Oh, and I believe the set starts off with a photo of Emma and her Auntie Amanda!
